Flour preparation in the kitchen is starting to gain momentum among at-home bakers alike. One of the top reasons is that it gives the baker a healthier option for his or her pastries and bread. Kitchen grain mills work in two different ways – one is with the use of burrs, and the other is by impact. For grain mills that use burrs, grinding is achieved by ground grains are refined by letting them pass through two burr surfaces which rotate against each other. This is the more common mechanism used in commercial grain mills. The other grinding mechanism is by impact. The grains are refined by crushing them. Comparing the two, the latter is noisier. Grain mills can also be operated manually or by electricity. Impact grain mills run on electricity, while burr grain mills can be operated manually or can be run by electricity.
Preparing your own flour is tedious, as compared to just grabbing one from the grocery store. But though it will require more effort, one can never go wrong with going for the healthier option.
